This week we learned the pumpkin life cycle and made some maps. We also had our FUN RUN! Thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered. I can't wait to see what the PTA is able to add to Old Hundred! We also celebrated crazy sock day! We enjoyed having our shoes off in the room :) We will continue the celebrations next week as we cross off our Pledge-O-Meter goals. MONDAY- Dance Party TUESDAY- Stuffed Animal Day WEDNESDAY- Wacky Hair Day THURSDAY- Pajama Day FRIDAY- 10 minutes extra recess On Friday our Mystery Reader read 2 books and brought a craft for the kids. They were able to design their own bookmarks. It was great seeing their creativity! We also started talking about maps. We listened to a song about walking around the town. We talked about what towns need, and then the class made maps in groups. We used paper for roads, blocks for buildings, and people for people :) One group even added a hotel for visitors. I was so impressed!

This week we read a lot of nonfiction texts to expand our knowledge of bats and spiders. We focused on bats Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and then switched to spiders on Thursday and Friday. We made a KWL chart for both, and I was so impressed with the facts students already knew! Students were very interested in echolocation. We did an echolocation science experiment. We learned that bats make a lot of noise by sending out beeps, but human ears can't hear them. We also learned that the brown bat, which lives in our area, eats A LOT of bugs! This week also kicked off our Boosterthon Fun Run. Our school's goal is to raise $25,000 for outdoor enhancements and STEAM. Our class is WINNING, with our current stats showing $88 per lap. Thank YOU for all of your support. The kids were excited to saran wrap "Chocolate E-Claire" to the pole. We also enjoyed our top prize, MOVIE DAY on Friday. The running of the Fun Run will be Wednesday, October 23rd at 10:15am. I'll put together a schedule for when we get to enjoy all of the other prizes we earned on our Pledge-O-Meter! I also want to thank all of the parents who volunteered in the classroom this week. It was so nice having the extra hands.
Next week, PUMPKINS and patterns and geography, oh my! This week we did lots of alphabet review, and on Tuesday we did a fun activity for the letter X. We read an awesome book written by second grade students- how cool is that! And then we made our own x-rays! Students traced their hand onto a paper towel, filled in their bones with white glue, closed the towel and dripped black watercolor paint on the whole thing. It was a little messy, but so much fun! Next week is all about BATS & SPIDERS! We will be reading non-fiction and fiction texts about each, welcoming parent volunteers to the room (room moms are working on a schedule), and hopefully we'll finish up PALS and VKRP assessments. If you are able to donate an item to our classroom to help with our upcoming themes, please click HERE. Thank you!
